Katie Boncella and Colleagues Identify Common Outcome Measures and Remaining Measurement Challenges
Muscle health research has kept up with other types of 'health', but what 'muscle health' means, varies widely. Thus, we performed a systematic search which identified 65 clinical and randomized controlled trials that used 'muscle health' in the title or abstract.
The identified studies used a wide variety of tests and evaluations, with most employing several 'domains' of 'muscle health' (muscle mass/morphology, strength/power, physical function etc.). Clear themes emerged, with studies typically using simple, low-cost, and portable tools (e.g., grip strength, sit-to-stand).
The discussion section includes what we deem should encompass 'Muscle Health', with suggestions and a conceptual model. Moreover, we differentiate between the framework for muscle health and the standardization process concerning the selection of specific test protocols, the analysis approach concerning body stature and relative strength, and the weighting of outcomes within the domains.
